MY APPROACH IN TEACHING PIANO
WHAT I TEACh
My goal is to provide a comprehensive education in piano that focuses on advancing overall ability to read and play music, developing performance skills, and understanding basic music theory.
Curriculum reflects this goal and often includes technical exercises, a method book for students in beginning levels, traditional "Classical" music, a mix of other styles of music, as well as written theory assignments and/or flashcards.
Goals, curriculum, and assignments are uniquely-designed and tailored to each individual student, and the personal goals and musical interests and goals of students are highly encouraged and incorporated into study whenever possible. I want my students to love and have fun playing in whatever unique capacity they desire.

PERFORMANCE & ADDITIONAL OPPORTUNITIES
Students have the option of enrolling in combined Group Performance/Musicianship Classes classes, where we focus on reinforcing theory concepts and other areas of musicianship, often through a mix of games and activities. These classes allow students to socialize, learn, and perform in a group of their similarly-skilled/aged peers.
Studio recitals, rehearsals and group performance classes are opportunities made available to all students, with a (minimum) requirement of at least one piece that is learned, polished, and memorized. Each student can also earn a mini-recital at the end of the year.
Additional (optional) opportunities for eligible students include yearly OMTA District Achievement Auditions and Theory exams, COMTA events and competitions throughout the year, as well as Music Development Program assessments associated with the Royal Conservatory of Music.
HOW I TEACH
Three aspects I consider most essential in teaching piano include:
Balanced Approach.
It is important that students develop and strengthen skills while studying with me, and it is also essential for lessons to be a positive experience. I believe the two ideas need not be mutually exclusive and that a healthy balance between the two can be found. My goal is to foster a positive atmosphere conducive to inspiration, encouragement, and growth, while simultaneously aspiring for excellence. Finding that unique balance with each student allows me to help equip students with the ability to skillfully utilize and enjoy playing the piano...for life.
Relationship & Communication.
Private lessons require trust and commitment from parents and students, and positive and mutually respectful student/teacher/parent relationships are crucial. Frequent and open communication helps to keep things ticking along smoothly.
Measurable Progress.
Broad concepts and skills guide progress, and focus on mastering them in weekly and overall study is key to meeting goals and moving forward. Without knowing these goals, though, it is easy for students to just float along. That's why tangible, attainable goals in the form of performances, exams, concepts, etc. are determined and also shared via student password-protected pages on this website; weekly lessons focus on accomplishing these goals.

ENROLL
I enjoy working with a small number of students, so availability is limited, and enrollment is capped. Students interview for placement in the studio, however, I am always willing to consider a student and see if it will be a good fit.
